During the Croatian War of Independence approximately 2,000 self-organized militia defended the city of Vukovar for 87 days against approximately 36,000 troops of the Yugoslav People's Army supported by 110 vehicles and tanks, and dozens of airplanes. The city suffered heavy damage during the siege and was eventually overrun.

Is it estimated that 2,000 defenders of Vukovar were killed, 800 went missing, and 22,000 civilians were forced into exile.

Croatia considers the siege of Vukovar as their Stalingrad in their war for independence during the collapse of Yugoslavia in the early 1990's.

My  photographs, some shown above, were taken during the summer of 2005.

The following is an extract from a Serbian film made in 1994 showing what Vukovar looked like from the air after the siege.
